School Trips Abroad: Tailor Made Volunteer Projects for School Expeditions
South Africa

This GVI Foundations expedition in Cape Town, South Africa, combines a range of youth development and educational volunteer projects in township schools with exciting cultural and adventure side trips.

The Project

You will assist on a number of different projects, all of which will focus on education and youth development, although the specific schedule will be determined by the local communities needs at the time. All volunteers will undergo a detailed training program on arrival covering; lesson planning, classroom management, basic Xhosa language tuition, daily life and what to expect inside the township. Some of the children fall behind at school because the classes are so overcrowded that teachers are not able to give every child sufficient individual attention. To address this problem, we have designed and implemented a project that provides extra tuition to children having difficulties with reading and writing. You will help bring these students up to the required academic standards by preparing resources, planning and delivering lessons and should you need any assistance GVI staff are always on hand.

GVI Foundations volunteers will also support local teachers, communities and GVI staff to run sports programs at the schools. This may involve leading fitness exercises, teaching a range of outdoor games, assisting with tournaments or running workshops promoting healthy living. Activities and sports provide the children with an alternative to alcohol, drugs and crime, all too prevalent in the townships, and our aim is to promote healthy living and keep the children off the streets. In addition to the sports and teaching projects we also work at children’s centres to provide educational opportunities to young orphans and disadvantaged children. You will teach the children (up to the age of 8) English, arts, music and drama and help develop their fine and gross motor skills by running fun, informal and interactive classes. With your assistance we can provide these children with a safe, creative and caring environment where they can develop to their full potential.

Excursions

The expedition has been designed so that you will have the opportunity to experience all that South Africa has to offer, such as breathtaking natural beauty, incredible wildlife, a fascinating history and a wonderful blend of cultures and traditions. Cape Town alone has plenty to see and do, and the GVI Foundations team leaders will show you the city and surrounding areas highlights.

GVI in South Africa

GVI first established the Cape Town projects in 2009, after setting up a partnership with a fascinating woman called Mama Lumka. Mama Lumka, almost singlehandedly, and with no outside funding, was running a care home for disabled and orphaned children in a township outside of Cape Town. After deciding to lend Mama Lumka our full support later that year, GVI has helped teach sports to over 1000 children each week,  we have tutored children in a GVI-run school which provides free pre-primary education and to date 650 GVI volunteers have helped us achieve these remarkable goals. The program has expanded and our team of staff now numbers 24, and they oversee a range of community development and conservation projects across the whole of South Africa. In recognition of our work we were invited to a meeting with the Deputy President of South Africa where GVI staff and volunteers were thanked personally for their valuable contributions.
